R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, With the passing of Jean Yates on August 3, 2003, at the age of 74, the community of San Antonio lost a highly regarded civic leader and a beloved friend; and WHEREAS, Born Ardath Jeanne Combs on May 12, 1929, in Fremont, Nebraska, she moved with her family to Allendale, Missouri, as a young child and graduated from Grant City High School in 1947; and WHEREAS, After receiving a teaching certificate from Maryville State Teachers College in Missouri, Mrs. Yates taught for a year in a rural school; she also worked for the superintendent of schools in Worth County, Missouri, served as the first secretary of John Glenn Elementary School in the Northside Independent School District of San Antonio, and served on the staff of her local water district, from which she was retired; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Yates contributed enormously to her community, where she was a member of the Rainbow Hills Baptist Church and a cofounder of the Rainbow Hills Area Neighborhood Association; she headed the association's food assistance and holiday gift program for several years and ensured the group's successful 2003 National Night Out event, attending to myriad details just days before her passing; and WHEREAS, The wife of Wilmer T. "Sonny" Yates and the mother of six children, Pamela, Terry, Timothy, Idalu, Tommy Jo, and Todd, Mrs. Yates created a warm and inviting home for her large, close-knit family; and WHEREAS, In recognition of all that Mrs. Yates accomplished in behalf of her community, the Rainbow Hills Community Center was rededicated as the Jean Yates Community Center on April 10, 2004; and WHEREAS, Jean Yates was a blessing in the lives of countless people, and her compassionate heart and concern for others will long be remembered by those fortunate to have known her; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life and accomplishments of Ardath Jeanne "Jean" Combs Yates and extend sincere sympathy to her family and to all who mourn the loss of this cherished woman; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Ardath Jeanne "Jean" Combs Yates.
