H.R. No. 249



R E S O L U T I O N
	WHEREAS, Madisonville, home of the only mushroom festival in 
Texas, is holding its annual extravaganza in celebration of that 
delicacy on October 16, 2004; and
	WHEREAS, Among the many activities scheduled for the day are 
demonstrations showing the culinary uses of mushrooms by members of 
the Brazos Valley Chefs Association and by chefs from Monterey 
Mushrooms, Inc., the largest grower/shipper and marketer of fresh 
mushrooms in the country; in addition, representatives of Monterey, 
which operates both a farm and a plant in Madisonville, will also be 
on hand to demonstrate mushroom-growing techniques; and
	WHEREAS, Visitors to the festival will receive a mushroom 
cookbook and will have the opportunity to sample the wide array of 
treats prepared by the chefs, as well as popular Texas wines from 
five different wineries; other activities on the program include a 
mushroom-cooking contest, a photography contest, artist exhibits 
and sales, a quilt show, and a Madison County sesquicentennial 
exhibit by students from the Madisonville school district; also 
slated for the festival-goers' enjoyment are a mariachi band, an 
extensive herb and plant sale, and booths selling other Texas 
agricultural products; and
	WHEREAS, Concurrently with the Mushroom Festival, the 
downtown merchants of Madisonville are hosting their 15th annual 
Saturday on the Square; highlights include more than 100 arts and 
crafts booths, live entertainment throughout the day, children's 
activities, food vendors, and a large book sale sponsored by the 
Friends of the Library; and
	WHEREAS, Madisonville residents and visitors alike can get an 
early start on the festivities Friday night, October 15, when the 
Madison County Arts Council holds an auction of pieces donated by 
local artists; proceeds benefit the council and a scholarship fund; 
the evening's art, live music, Texas wine, and mushroom appetizers 
are sure to whet everyone's anticipation of all that the following 
day has to offer; and
	WHEREAS, A unique affair in the Lone Star State, the 
Madisonville Mushroom Festival promises to be a highly enjoyable 
occasion for all who attend; now, therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas 
Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby recognize October 16, 2004, 
as Madisonville Mushroom Festival Day and extend to all associated 
with the festival sincere best wishes for a successful and 
memorable event.
