R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Dr. Franklyn Jenifer will soon begin a new chapter in his distinguished and multifaceted career as he steps down from his position as president of The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD); and WHEREAS, Dr. Jenifer has led UTD through a period of unprecedented growth and has set high standards to which others may aspire; since he became president in 1994, the institution has had a 129 percent increase in research grants, has established a center devoted to research on sickle-cell disease, and has hired its first Nobel laureate; and WHEREAS, Under his direction, an arrangement was made between Texas Instruments and the state that will bring $300 million to the university over the next five years; two new buildings have been constructed, two facilities have undergone major renovation, and construction of a new science and engineering building is scheduled to begin in the near future; and WHEREAS, Before moving to The University of Texas at Dallas, this esteemed administrator was president of Howard University in Washington, D.C., and associate provost of Rutgers University in New Jersey; he holds bachelor's and master's degrees in microbiology from Howard University and a doctorate in plant virology from the University of Maryland; and WHEREAS, Through his vision and guidance, Dr. Jenifer has contributed immeasurably to the reputation of The University of Texas at Dallas as a vital center of higher education, and it is indeed appropriate to take this opportunity to recognize his tremendous dedication and numerous achievements; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby honor Dr. Franklyn Jenifer on the occasion of his retirement as president of The University of Texas at Dallas and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Dr. Jenifer as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
