R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Sergeant Giovanni Bennett of Georgetown has returned stateside from Iraq after sustaining injuries on April 4, 2004, in Kirkuk, northeast of Baghdad, and this brave and dedicated soldier is most deserving of our highest praise for risking his life in service to his country; and WHEREAS, A member of the U.S. Army's 25th Infantry Division, Sgt. Bennett was injured while searching for a suspected weapons cache; seven of his fellow soldiers were injured, one fatally, when a car bomb exploded in the vicinity of the American soldiers; and WHEREAS, Sgt. Bennett, who was only recently promoted to his current rank, demonstrated admirable leadership and courage in the aftermath of the explosion; his concern for the safety and welfare of the men in his charge was his highest priority, surpassing concern for his own personal well-being; and WHEREAS, The heroic efforts of this American soldier have been recognized by his commanding officer, Lt. Joshua M. Grenard, who is expected to recommend Sgt. Bennett for the Bronze Star with "V" device for his valorous performance in combat; Sgt. Bennett will likely receive the Purple Heart as well; and WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to recognize Sgt. Bennett for his unwavering commitment to his country and to his comrades in arms; he is an example not only to his fellow servicemen and servicewomen, but to the countless Americans who support the efforts of our troops; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby commend Sgt. Giovanni Bennett for his service in Iraq and extend to him best wishes for a swift and complete recovery from his injuries; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Sgt. Bennett as an expression of highest regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
