R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Miles Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church,
located in Houston's historic Fifth Ward, is commemorating 100
years of outstanding service to the community in 2004; and
WHEREAS, Since its organization in a small building on the
banks of the Buffalo Bayou by its charter members, the church has
thrived under the inspired leadership of a host of dedicated
clergymen, from its initial pastor, the Reverend J. M. Jones, to its
current leader, the Reverend Charles H. Webster, Sr.; and
WHEREAS, Over the past century, the church has undergone
tremendous change and experienced its share of adversity, but
through the hard work and dedication of its leaders and
congregants, Miles Chapel has overcome an array of challenges,
including fires and storms as well as financial hardships, to
emerge triumphant; today members take great pride in their church's
extensive achievements and look forward to a future replete with
promise; and
WHEREAS, Playing a vital part in the Houston community, the
parishioners of Miles Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church
remain steadfast in their faith and in their service to others, and
it is indeed a pleasure to join them in celebrating the centennial
of their church and the innumerable contributions this committed
congregation has made to the greater community; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby congratulate the clergy and
members of Miles Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church on the
church's 100th anniversary and extend to them sincere best wishes
for continued success with their many good works; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
