R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Milby High School Buffaloes of the Houston Independent School District have won the 2003-2004 UIL Class 5A State Basketball Championship, capping off an undefeated 39-0 season and capturing the school's second state crown; and WHEREAS, Led by first-year head coach and Milby High alumnus Jimmy Duffer, the Buffaloes stampeded through the regular season and into the state tournament, not slowing down until the championship trophy was in their possession; Coach Duffer received able support throughout the season from assistant coaches and fellow Milby High alumni Sam Hines, Lee Hardy, and Sam Benitez; and WHEREAS, Team members are Tramaine Webster, J. J. Robinson, Jawann McClellan, Tavon Bailey, Kevin Quinney, Chris Jordan, Chris Ramirez, Larry Posey, Shakari Chandler, John Williams, and Leon St. Rose; Mr. McClellan, an All-American, won tournament MVP honors and is the team's second all-time leading scorer; and WHEREAS, Also contributing to the team's success were student managers Angie Marquez, Veronica del Toro, and Amir Ayyobi, video coordinator George McClellan, and school principal Richard Barajas; longtime Milby High basketball coach Boyce Honea offered guidance to Coach Duffer throughout the season, sharing his vast experience with his heir; and WHEREAS, The Buffaloes' high-powered offense generated more than 100 points five times and more than 90 points on nine other occasions; the team defeated its district opponents by an average of 44 points per game and became just the seventh area team to go undefeated in Class 5A competition; and WHEREAS, In addition to nabbing the state crown, the Buffaloes also won the prestigious Greater Houston Jaycees Tournament and the Academy National Tournament; these talented athletes demonstrated dedication to the fundamentals and commitment to teamwork throughout the long season, and their efforts and successes have instilled a sense of pride in their community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby congratulate Coach Jimmy Duffer and the Milby High School Buffaloes basketball team on winning the 2003-2004 UIL State Championship and extend best wishes for continued good fortune and happiness to all those associated with the team; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
