R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Members of the Joseph Ligon Chapter of Daughters of
the American Revolution are commemorating the 90th anniversary of
their chapter on May 15, 2004, with a luncheon and celebration at
the Paris Golf and Country Club; and
WHEREAS, The Joseph Ligon Chapter was founded in Paris on
February 20, 1914, and received its charter on July 7, 1914; its
founder, Mrs. Miriam Fort Gill, named the chapter for two of her
ancestors, Captain Joseph Ligon, Sr., and Lieutenant Joseph Ligon,
Jr., who served together in a troop of the Virginia militia during
the American Revolution; and
WHEREAS, Over the years, 43 women have served as regent of the
chapter; the present regent of the Joseph Ligon Chapter is Mrs.
Catharine Browning; and
WHEREAS, Daughters of the American Revolution was created "to
cherish, maintain, and extend the institutions of American freedom,
to foster true patriotism, and love of country, and to aid in
securing for mankind all the blessings of liberty"; and
WHEREAS, For nearly a century, members of the Joseph Ligon
Chapter have worked to enhance awareness of American history and
promote an appreciation of the ideals on which this country was
founded; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby congratulate the members of
the Joseph Ligon Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution on
the occasion of their chapter's 90th anniversary and extend sincere
best wishes for an enjoyable and memorable anniversary celebration;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the Joseph Ligon Chapter as an expression of high
regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
