H.R. No. 324


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Houston resident and Vietnam native Toan Nguyen has lived an extraordinary life marked by the tragedy of the Vietnam War, and he is most deserving of special recognition for his valorous service during that war; and WHEREAS, A graduate of Thu Duc Officer Candidate School and the Intermediate Intelligence Program at Cay Mai School, Warrant Officer Nguyen was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division as an intelligence officer from 1966 to 1969; and WHEREAS, Promoted to platoon leader of the 404th Scout Company in 1969, he was later named executive officer; he received a number of medals and commendations from the South Vietnamese Army and was also awarded the Bronze Star from the U.S. Army; and WHEREAS, From 1970 to 1975, Mr. Nguyen served as an intelligence officer with G2/II Division Headquarters in Pleiku Province in the Central Highlands of Vietnam; promoted to the rank of first lieutenant, he went on to earn his captain's bars; and WHEREAS, At the war's conclusion, this dedicated soldier was jailed in two Vietnamese "re-education camps" for more than 10 years; he was released from the camp in December 1985 and came to the United States as a political refugee nearly nine years later; and WHEREAS, Mr. Nguyen's journey to this country has been filled with trials that are unimaginable to most people; his courage and conviction have carried him to freedom, bringing him a better life in the Land of Opportunity; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby honor Toan Nguyen for his heroic journey and commend him for his service to the United States of America and the people of Vietnam; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Nguyen as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
