R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The family and friends of Lance Corporal Shane Lee Goldman of Orange have suffered an immeasurable loss with his passing on April 5, 2004, at the age of 19, from injuries sustained in Iraq; and WHEREAS, A member of the United States Marine Corps, Corporal Goldman was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Pendleton, California; he was mortally wounded during a mission to quell resistance in the city of Fallujah; and WHEREAS, Born in Orange on April 13, 1984, Corporal Goldman attended Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School and graduated from Parkview Baptist High School in Louisiana; he fulfilled a longtime ambition to become a Marine when he enlisted in 2002, continuing his family's notable tradition of Marine Corps service; and WHEREAS, Corporal Goldman departed for basic training on Christmas Day 2002 and became one of the first to be deployed to Iraq the following year; his unit returned to the United States in May 2003, after the fall of Baghdad; deployed for a second tour in Iraq, Corporal Goldman and his battalion first spent several months at Camp Hansen, on the Japanese island of Okinawa, training for urban warfare; and WHEREAS, Notwithstanding the dangers that he faced and the intensity of war that only those engaged in it can fully know, Corporal Goldman remained courageously steadfast in his commitment to his mission and to his comrades; and WHEREAS, Close to a thousand mourners gathered at North Orange Baptist Church to bid farewell to this cherished young man, and he was laid to rest with full military honors; and WHEREAS, A Marine who exemplified the highest ideals of the corps, Shane Goldman will be lovingly remembered as well for his joyous appreciation of life, his deep affection for his large, extended family, and his gift for true friendship; for his valiant efforts and supreme sacrifice, Americans are forever in his debt; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby pay special tribute to the life of Lance Corporal Shane Lee Goldman and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his father, George "Scooter" Goldman; to his mother and stepfather, Jan and Bobby Manshack; to his sister, H. Cheyenne Goldman; to his fiancée, Shelly Malin; and to his many other relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Lance Corporal Shane Lee Goldman.
