R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The passing of Guy W. Shaw on May 7, 2004, at the age of 90, has deeply saddened the family and friends of this esteemed lawyer and longtime Abilene resident; and WHEREAS, Born on April 27, 1914, in Crosbyton, Mr. Shaw moved with his family to Abilene in 1927 and graduated from Abilene High School in 1932; he earned a degree in history and government from Hardin-Simmons University (HSU) and a law degree from The University of Texas Law School in Austin; during World War II, he joined the U.S. Navy and served with distinction in the South Pacific theater on a destroyer escort and attack cargo ship as well as an attorney for the U.S. War Department; and WHEREAS, After World War II, Mr. Shaw was a Taylor County attorney for two years and then joined the law firm of Byrd, Shaw and Weeks, which became Shaw, Wilborn and Johnson in 1986; licensed to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, Mr. Shaw enjoyed a distinguished 35-year career with the law firm, and he served 15 years as president of Security Abstract Company in Abilene; and WHEREAS, This esteemed HSU alumnus remained devoted to his alma mater throughout his life; he taught business law at the college and served as president of the HSU Alumni Association and as a member and chairman of its board of development; a staunch supporter of the school of music and myriad other programs, he received HSU's John J. Keeter Alumni Award, the highest honor that can be bestowed on a graduate; and WHEREAS, Active in professional and community associations, Mr. Shaw held membership in the local, state, and American bar associations, and he worked on the board of the Salvation Army; a valued member of First Baptist Church in Abilene, Mr. Shaw was a longtime member of the sanctuary choir, where he sang in the men's quartet and men's ensemble; he also served as chairman of the board of deacons as well as on numerous church committees and was named deacon emeritus; and WHEREAS, On September 1, 1943, Mr. Shaw married the former Dolores Michael in Wichita Falls; for more than 60 years, they shared a special bond of love, filling each other's lives with many happy times and cherished family memories; and WHEREAS, Mr. Shaw was an exemplary Texan whose service to his fellowman will be of a lasting significance in the lives of countless individuals, and his memory will not soon be forgotten; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of Guy W. Shaw and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his beloved wife, Dolores Michael Shaw; to his sons, James M. Shaw, M.D., and wife Ellen, and Guy W. Shaw, Jr., and wife Elaine; to his daughter, Suzanne Shaw McClure and husband Tommy; to his sisters, Dottie Shaw Parker and Gerry Shaw Weatherby; to his 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; to his sisters-in-law, Joy Michael and Sue Broderson and husband Emmett; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Guy W.
