SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 27
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize C. B. Berry Elementary School in Arlington on the grand occasion of its 50th anniversary, which is being celebrated in May of this year; and WHEREAS, C. B. Berry Elementary School was built in 1954, the same year the General Motors Corporation opened a facility in Arlington; officials named the school in honor of the late C. B. Berry, a local banker and cotton buyer who served on the school board for 30 years and died in 1938; and WHEREAS, The school opened in October of 1954 under the leadership of Ray Wood, who served as principal until December of that year; Hubert Morton then became principal and served until he retired in 1975; currently, Dr. Kathy Link serves as principal and Carmen Dearmas serves as vice principal; and WHEREAS, The opening ceremony of the 50th anniversary celebration will take place on May 14, 2004, at C. B. Berry Elementary with a ribbon cutting and balloon release with current students and faculty; and WHEREAS, A highlight of the anniversary celebrations is the 50th reunion on May 15, 2004, at the elementary school; many former students are participating in this grand occasion; they will be joined by three of the first members of the school's Parents and Teachers Association and by 10 teachers and 23 parents of the school's inaugural year; also participating in the anniversary celebrations are Judge Tom Vandergriff, Mayor Bob Cluck, members of the city council and other city officials, current school board members, and the superintendent of schools; and WHEREAS, Other activities taking place include "Berried Treasures," a musical presentation by the C. B. Berry 4th grade, on May 7; a Sock Hop with Dana Hamilton on May 15; and a performance by the reunion choir and band; there will also be exhibitions on the school's history, the presentation of an alumni donation of $400 to the school library, and the unveiling of the "Gallery of Principals" portraits; and WHEREAS, C. B. Berry Elementary School has served the people of Arlington for 50 years and has educated countless young Texans, and it deserves to be proud of its great history; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby commend C. B. Berry Elementary School for its outstanding service to the community and extend congratulations to its students, faculty, administration, and families on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the school as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
