SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 41
In Memory
of
Viola Hamilton Pitts
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of Fort Worth in mourning the loss of Viola Hamilton Pitts, who
died on April 15, 2004, at the age of 89; and
WHEREAS, Viola Pitts was born in East Texas on September 8, 1914;
she spent most of her life in Como, a historically black neighborhood
in West Fort Worth, where her tireless efforts to better the community
earned her the title of the "unofficial mayor of Como"; and
WHEREAS, She also served on the John Peter Smith Hospital
Board of Managers and as a member of numerous other boards and task
forces; she was an active member of the Democratic Party and a longtime
election judge who worked hard to inspire area citizens to vote; and
WHEREAS, To honor her work on behalf of many deserving
people, a Tarrant County medical center was renamed JPS Health
Center--Viola M. Pitts/Como in 2000; and
WHEREAS, A devout Christian, Viola was a longtime member of
the Johnson Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, where she
served as a steward for 29 years and participated in numerous
other activities; and
WHEREAS, Viola Pitts was devoted to her family and was a
friend to many in the community, and she leaves behind memories
that will be treasured forever by her family and countless
friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby extend sincere
condolences to the bereaved family of Viola Hamilton Pitts; and,
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of Viola Hamilton Pitts.
