SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 59
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the San Benito High School chess team, which recently
tied for sixth place at the United States Chess Federation's
national championship tournament in Dallas; and
WHEREAS, The San Benito High School chess team experienced
its biggest win ever during a rigorous three-day competition
against 44 other teams in their division; the team was also
ranked as Texas' best team in the "above average" group of high
school chess players; and
WHEREAS, Over the last few months, these young men and
women have participated in chess tournaments at regional, state,
and national levels, improving with each game they played; under
the leadership of their math and chess coach, Brian Powell, they
have developed the skills which have allowed them to excel as a
team; and
WHEREAS, Team members Abraham Amaya, Guadalupe Cantu,
Marcus David Cruz, Bryan Fernandez, Jose Luis Garcia, Gabriel Garza,
Christopher Gonzales, Richard Joshua Montalvo, and Ruben Perez
have demonstrated superior talent and perseverance, and they
deserve to be proud of their accomplishments; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby commend the members
of the San Benito High School chess team for their exceptional
skills and extend congratulations to them for their admirable
achievements at the United States Chess Federation's national
championship tournament; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the team as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
