SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 97
In Memory
of
Sarah McKinney Cheever
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins
the citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of
Sarah "Sally" McKinney Cheever, who died April 18, 2004, at
the age of 75; and
WHEREAS, Sarah Hunter McKinney was born and raised in
El Paso and graduated from Loretta Academy; she attended
The University of Texas at El Paso before going to the University
of California at Berkeley, where she earned a business degree;
and
WHEREAS, Known for her carefree and outgoing personality,
Sally was an elementary school teacher when she met and later
married Charles E. Cheever, Jr., an Air Force pilot stationed
in San Angelo; the couple enjoyed a happy union of 51 years and
raised six children; and
WHEREAS, As the mother of four daughters, Sally became
active in 1963 with the Girl Scout program; she served as a
troop leader and continued to be enthusiastically committed to
scouting long after her own daughters graduated; she combined her
love of scouting and travel by escorting several scout troops to
camps in Mexico, Switzerland, and England; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of her great love of the Girl Scouts
and camping, her family established the Sally Cheever Campership
Fund to help enable any girl to attend Girl Scout camp; in 1994,
the San Antonio Area Council of Girl Scouts awarded Sally the
Trefoil Award for serving as an outstanding role model for girls
and young women; and
WHEREAS, Sally was also active with the San Antonio
Junior League and was named its Volunteer Extraordinaire in 1998;
she was a longtime member and an officer of the San Antonio Bar
Auxiliary and a member of the Military Civilian Club; and
WHEREAS, A devout Christian, Sally was a member of
Saint Pius X Catholic Church; she served as a Eucharistic Minister
and was a longtime volunteer at Saint Peter's Prince of the
Apostle's School and Church; and
WHEREAS, A proud Texan and a direct descendant of
Abijha Dickson, who was killed at the Battle of San Jacinto in
1836, she was an active member and former president of the
Daughters of the Republic of Texas; she was also a volunteer at
the Alamo and served on the Alamo Committee; and
WHEREAS, A woman of integrity, strength, and generosity,
Sally gave unselfishly of her time to others, and her optimism,
her warmth, and her valued counsel will not be forgotten by those
who knew her; and
WHEREAS, Sally Cheever lived her life to the fullest and
was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and she leaves
behind memories that will be treasured forever by her family and
many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby extend sincere
condolences to the bereaved family of Sarah Cheever: her best
friend and devoted husband, Charlie Cheever, Jr.; her daughters
and sons-in-law, Suzanne and James Goudge, Jean Cheever, Joan and
Dennis Quinn, and Cece Cheever; her sons and daughter-in-law,
Christopher Cheever and Charlie Cheever III and Regina; her
sister, Irene Prescott; her brother, Hance McKinney, Jr.; and her
eight grandchildren; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so
in memory of Sarah Cheever.
