SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 100
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Gunnery Sergeant Robert Rivera, who is retiring on August 31, 2004, after 21 years of outstanding service in the United States Marine Corps; and WHEREAS, Gunnery Sergeant Rivera was born in Corpus Christi on March 21, 1964; he graduated from Foy H. Moody High School in May, 1982, and entered Marine Corps recruit training in October, 1982; and WHEREAS, Following completion of infantry training, Robert Rivera served aboard the USS John F. Kennedy, seeing sea duty in the Mediterranean and participating in the multinational peacekeeping force in Beirut, Lebanon; after being promoted to corporal, he served with the 3rd Marines in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii; subsequently, he was promoted to sergeant and stationed at Parris Island, North Carolina, where he served as a drill instructor; he later served as a platoon guide and platoon sergeant at Camp Pendleton, California, and also participated in Operation United Shield in Mogadishu, Somalia; and WHEREAS, After being promoted to staff sergeant, Robert Rivera served with the Marine Aviation Training Support Group in Meridian, Mississippi, and returned for a tour of duty at Camp Pendleton; in February, 2002, he began his current assignment as gunnery sergeant, serving as platoon sergeant and training chief; and WHEREAS, Gunnery Sergeant Rivera also completed a deployment in the Western Pacific aboard the USS Essex and participated in several unit deployments to Okinawa, Japan; and WHEREAS, During his military service, Robert Rivera has earned the Combat Action Ribbon, the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Gold Star, the Meritorious Mast, and other commendations; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby commend Gunnery Sergeant Robert Rivera for his dedicated service as a member of the United States Marine Corps and extend best wishes to him for the retirement years ahead; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
