SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 118
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Taylor Fitzgerald, Chelsey Hutto, Hannah Roy, and
Kevin Thompson of Redwater Middle School, who have been chosen
to participate in Project Citizen; and
WHEREAS, Project Citizen is a civic education program
developed by the Center for Civic Education; the program promotes
competent and responsible participation in state and local
government and helps students learn how to express their opinions,
how to decide which agency can help them address problems they
identify, and how to influence policy decisions at the agency
level; project participants must work with teachers and adult
volunteers; and
WHEREAS, These outstanding students selected the lack of a
recycling center in Redwater as the problem they would address;
working with Lisa Anderson, their fifth grade science teacher and
project adviser, they developed an action plan to deal with this
problem and presented it to Texas A&M University-Texarkana, the
Redwater City Council, the local school board and Parent-Teacher
Association, and the Bowie County Commissioners Court; their
plan has been well received, and they are currently organizing a
local paper, aluminum, and steel recycling program with
Tri-State Iron and Metal Company; and
WHEREAS, Chelsey, Hannah, Kevin, and Taylor are presenting
their proposal in Austin on May 14, 2004, at the statewide Project
Citizen competition; they hope to be selected to represent Texas at
the national level; and
WHEREAS, These fine young students have worked diligently
on their project, spending many hours outside school gathering
information and refining their ideas; they have earned the admiration
of their school and the City of Redwater for creating a project
that can benefit the entire community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby commend Taylor Fitzgerald,
Chelsey Hutto, Hannah Roy, and Kevin Thompson for their outstanding
work on the recycling project; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
them as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
