SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 134
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the Jesse H. Jones Senior High School boys basketball
team of the Houston Independent School District for winning the
4A state basketball championship title on March 13, 2004; and
WHEREAS, The Falcons captured the 4A state title with an
exciting down-to-the-wire 63-61 victory over Dallas Independent
School District's Lincoln High School; the victory marked the
school's first state basketball championship since 1965; and
WHEREAS, With a season record of 31-5 and a district record
of 18-0, the Falcons were ranked number one in the Greater Houston
area during the entire season; the team won 21 straight games and
finished in second place at the Academy National Invitational
Tournament, Texas Division; and
WHEREAS, Team members Daniel Gibson, Arthur Doug Smith,
Ray Sansom, Courvoisiea Jacobs, Jay Jenkins, Kendrick Bob,
Matthew Valmore, Derrick Wilson, Dexter Webb, Isreal Chandler,
Harrison Smith, and Terrance Jackson deserve to be proud of their
efforts and their outstanding performance at the state championship
playoffs; and
WHEREAS, The Falcons achieved their success under the
superior direction of Head Coach Jessie Shelton III, Assistant
Coach Welton Ray, and Assistant Coach Barrie Jones; other team
staff members who have contributed to the Falcons' winning season
are statisticians Sabrina Babineaux, Jasmine Scott, Tamika Chatman,
and Trashina Barnett, manager Derrick Ford, and camera operators
and technicians Johnathan Caraway and Max Casique; and
WHEREAS, The Falcons have exhibited much talent and
tenacity on the basketball court and have practiced the highest
ideals of sportsmanship throughout the season, and they are a
source of much pride to their school and the Houston community;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby commend the Jesse H. Jones
Senior High School basketball team for their exceptional
accomplishments and congratulate them on their 4A state basketball
championship; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution be prepared for
the team as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
