SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 190
In Memory
of
Chartier Newton
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Chartier Newton, who
died May 3, 2004, at the age of 71; and
WHEREAS, Chartier Newton was born February 18, 1933, and was
raised in Tyler; he earned a bachelor's degree in architecture from
Texas A&M University in 1956 and a master's degree from Cranbrook
Academy of Art in Michigan in 1957; and
WHEREAS, He received excellent training as a young architect
at Caudill, Rowlett and Scott in College Station, and he worked
with Eero Saarinen in Michigan; he served as a professor of
architecture at Texas A&M University, Rice University, and
The University of Texas at Austin; in 1981 he began his own
architectural firm in Austin, and he was inducted as a Fellow of
the American Institute of Architects in 1986; and
WHEREAS, Among Chartier's favorite architectural design
projects were the renovation of the Hirschfield House in downtown
Austin and the renovation of Sutton Hall and Goldsmith Hall at
The University of Texas at Austin; later, he found great joy in
designing churches, including Saint Thomas Episcopal Church in
College Station and Saint Michael's Episcopal Church in Austin;
he also influenced the design of the beautiful Loop 360 bridge
spanning Lake Austin; and
WHEREAS, Chartier took great pleasure in spending time in
nature, and he valued his many friendships, especially the
special companionship he found in The Geriatrics, a group of
longtime friends with whom he spent wonderful holidays; and
WHEREAS, Chartier Newton was a devoted husband, father,
and grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be
treasured forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby extend sincere
condolences to the bereaved family of Chartier Newton: his wife,
Patricia; his daughters and sons-in-law, Heather and Josh Kight,
Amy and Wally Kleindiest, and April and Mark Mangum; his seven
grandchildren; and his brother, Ferris Newton; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of Chartier Newton.
