SRC-JEC, MSY S.B. 833 78(R)BILL ANALYSIS Senate Research CenterS.B. 833 By: Williams State Affairs 6/26/2003 Enrolled DIGEST AND PURPOSE Under the Charitable Immunity and Liability Act, certain charitable organizations and their employees and volunteers are protected from liability for grievances arising from actions related to the charitable organization's work. S.B. 833 extends this immunity to alumni associations and related on-campus organizations. RULEMAKING AUTHORITY This bill does not expressly grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, institution, or agency. SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS SECTION 1. Amends Subdivision (1), Section 84.003, Civil Practice and Remedies Code, by adding language including certain private schools, excluding fraternities, sororities, and secret societies, and deleting language excluding alumni associations and related on-campus organizations from the definition of "charitable organization." Makes a conforming change. SECTION 2. Effective date: September 1, 2003. Makes application of this Act prospective.
