SRC-TAG S.B. 1881 78(R) BILL ANALYSIS Senate Research Center S.B. 1881 By: Whitmire Criminal Justice 5/19/2003 As Filed DIGEST AND PURPOSE Current law allows a judge of a criminal court who awards community supervision to a defendant to order payment of a one-time $50 fee to Crime Stoppers. As proposed, S.B. 1881 allows the judge to order a one time fee to either Crime Stoppers or a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to dependents of certified peace officers and firefighters who are killed in the line of duty and that serves the county in which the court is located. RULEMAKING AUTHORITY This bill does not expressly grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, institution, or agency. SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS SECTION 1. Amend Article 42.12, Section 11, Code of Criminal Procedure, by adding Subsection (i), to authorize a judge who grants community supervision to a person to require the person to make one payment in an amount not to exceed $100.00 to a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to dependents of certified peace officers and firefighters who are killed in the line of duty and that serves the county in which the court is located. SECTION 2. Effective date: September 1, 2003.
