DIGEST AND PURPOSE 

Current law allows a judge of a criminal court who sentences a defendant
to community supervision to order payment of a one-time $50 fee to Crime
Stoppers.  C.S.S.B. 1881 allows the judge to order payment of a one-time
fee to either Crime Stoppers or to a non-profit organization that provides
financial assistance to dependents of certified peace officers and
firefighters who are killed in the line of duty and that serves the county
in which the court is located.  

RULEMAKING AUTHORITY
      
This bill does not expressly grant any additional rulemaking authority to
a state officer, institution, or agency. 

SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS

SECTION 1.  Amends Section 11(a), Article 42.12, Code of Criminal
Procedure,  to provide that the conditions of community supervision may
include, but shall not be limited to, the conditions that the defendant
make one payment in an amount not to exceed $50 to a nonprofit
organization that provides financial assistance to dependents of certified
peace officers and firefighters who are killed in the line of duty and
that serves the county in which the court is located. 

SECTION 2.  Effective date: September 1, 2003.
