A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to the requirement that an applicant for a driver's license provide certain identification information to the Department of Public Safety. BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: SECTION 1. Section 521.142(a), Transportation Code, is amended to read as follows: (a) An application for an original license must state the applicant's full name and place and date of birth. This information must be verified by presentation of proof of identity satisfactory to the department. The department shall accept as proof of identity unexpired identity documents issued by foreign governments that bear the applicant's photo, full name, and date of birth, provided those governments are willing to verify said documents upon request of the department. SECTION 2. (a) This Act takes effect September 1, 2003. (b) The change in law made by this Act applies only to an application for a driver's license made on or after September 1, 2003. (c) An application for a driver's license made before September 1, 2003, is covered by the law in effect on the date of application, and the former law is continued in effect for that purpose.
