A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to longevity pay for county jailers employed by certain sheriff's departments. BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: SECTION 1. The heading to Section 152.074, Local Government Code, is amended to read as follows: Sec. 152.074. LONGEVITY PAY FOR COMMISSIONED DEPUTIES AND COUNTY JAILERS. SECTION 2. Section 152.074, Local Government Code, is amended by amending Subsection (a) and adding Subsection (c) to read as follows: (a) In a county with a population of 150,000 or more, the commissioners court shall provide to [longevity pay for] each commissioned deputy or county jailer of the sheriff's department longevity pay in an amount [of] not less than $5 a month for each year of service in the department, up to and including 25 years. Each commissioned deputy or county jailer is entitled to the longevity pay in addition to the deputy's or county jailer's regular compensation. (c) In this section, "county jailer" has the meaning assigned by Section 1701.001, Occupations Code. SECTION 3. The commissioners court of a county to which this Act applies shall begin providing longevity pay to county jailers as provided by Section 154.074(a), Local Government Code, as amended by this Act, at the beginning of the first county fiscal year that begins on or after the effective date of this Act. SECTION 4. This Act takes effect September 1, 2003.
