A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to county civil service coverage for deputy constables. BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 158, Local Government Code, is amended by adding Section 158.0105 to read as follows: Sec. 158.0105. DEPUTY CONSTABLES. (a) This section applies only to a deputy constable whom the commission defines as a county employee. (b) At the conclusion of the term for which a constable is elected or appointed, a deputy constable appointed by the constable is no longer entitled to the coverage of the county civil service system. (c) A deputy constable who loses coverage under Subsection (b) and is appointed as a deputy constable in the same or a different constable precinct in the county resumes coverage under the county civil service system without the probationary period described by Section 158.010(b) if the appointment occurs not later than the 30th day after the date the deputy loses coverage. SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2003.
