A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT

relating to workers' compensation self-insurance for certain 
institutions of higher education.
	BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:                        
	SECTION 1.  Section 501.022, Labor Code, is amended by 
adding  Subsection (d) to read as follows:
	(d)  Notwithstanding any other provision of this chapter, 
Texas Tech University and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences
Center may self-insure.
	SECTION 2.  Subchapter B, Chapter 501, Labor Code, is 
amended by adding Section 501.023 to read as follows:
	Sec. 501.023.  Notwithstanding any other provision of this 
chapter, an institution of higher education subject to this chapter 
may self-insure.
	SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2003.
