H.C.R. No. 33
HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Terrence Bunkley, a freshman at Dunbar High School
in Fort Worth, won the attention of one of the nation's premier
student science competitions with his eighth-grade science fair
project; and
WHEREAS, In the spring of 2002, Mr. Bunkley developed his
project by combining a skill he had learned in art class, extracting
colors from plants, with the scientific technique of monitoring pH
changes and the resulting effect on color changes in the plant dyes;
his project, titled "pHlower Power," won first place in the
chemistry category of the Dunbar Middle School and Fort Worth
regional science fairs and was nominated for entry in the Discovery
Channel Young Scientist Challenge; and
WHEREAS, He was selected as one of the competition's 40
national finalists from more than 1,700 entrants that fall, placing
him among an elite group of students who had demonstrated
exceptional innovation, creativity, and communication skills in
original science research projects; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Bunkley won a week-long trip to Washington,
D.C., to present his project and compete for various scholarship
awards, and while he did not take home the grand prize, his
outstanding performance is a tremendous source of pride for his
teachers, family, friends, and state; and
WHEREAS, One of only eight students from Texas named as a
finalist, Mr. Bunkley can take great satisfaction in his
participation in this prestigious competition, and his efforts are
most deserving of special legislative recognition; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the 78th Texas Legislature hereby
congratulate Terrence Bunkley on being chosen as a finalist in the
2002 Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge and extend to him
sincere best wishes for continued success in all of his future
endeavors; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Bunkley as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
