CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Blood-related cancers currently afflict more than 700,000 Americans, and an estimated 110,000 new cases are diagnosed each year; and WHEREAS, In 2003 alone, some 60,500 men, women, and children in the United States will die from leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma; and WHEREAS, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is dedicated to finding cures for these diseases and to supporting those individuals who suffer from blood-related cancers; patients and their families in the Lone Star State benefit greatly from the care and services offered by the society's office in Houston; and WHEREAS, The State of Texas is likewise committed to supporting the search for cures and palliative treatments, and the Texas House of Representatives and Senate encourage private efforts to enhance research funding and education programs aimed at combating and treating leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby designate September 2003 as Leukemia and Lymphoma Awareness Month in Texas and pay tribute to those Americans engaged in the fight against these diseases.
