CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Wichita Falls lost a cherished member of the
community with the passing of Minnie Rhea Wood on January 25, 2003,
at the age of 94; and
WHEREAS, Named the Texas "Philanthropist of the Year" in
1993, Mrs. Wood was well known for her generosity and dedication to
the betterment of Wichita Falls; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Wood arrived in her adopted home in the early
1920s and became a partner in the Fain and McGaha Oil Company and
the director of McClurkans Department Store, and she was also
involved in ranching; and
WHEREAS, Active in civic affairs, she served on the boards of
City National Bank, the YMCA, the Midwestern University Foundation,
the Wichita Falls Museum and Art Center, the Wichita Falls Symphony
Orchestra, and Presbyterian Manor; and
WHEREAS, A major benefactor of Midwestern State University,
she donated $2 million to improve the fine arts program of the
university and later gave $1 million to establish a scholarship
fund for students studying nursing, radiology, dental hygiene, and
respiratory care; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Wood also gave generously to the First
Presbyterian Church, the Wichita Falls Museum and Art Center, and
the Eighth Street campus of the United Regional Health Care System;
and
WHEREAS, A notable community philanthropist, Mrs. Wood gave
unselfishly to others and will long be remembered for her
compassionate nature; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas
hereby honor the life of Minnie Rhea Wood and extend sincere
sympathy to her family: to her daughter, Martha Fain; to her
grandson and granddaughter; to her four great-grandchildren; and to
her many friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of
Minnie Rhea Wood.
