CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The passing of James H. Copp on January 18, 2003, has greatly saddened the family, friends, colleagues, and students of this esteemed educator; and WHEREAS, A native of Minnesota, Dr. Copp was born in Thief River Falls on April 28, 1925; after receiving bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Minnesota in 1949 and 1951, he went on to earn a doctorate in sociology from the University of Wisconsin in 1954; and WHEREAS, Before joining the staff of Texas A&M University in 1972, this esteemed gentleman taught at Kansas State University, Pennsylvania State University, and his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin, and he worked for the United States Department of Agriculture; and WHEREAS, Dr. Copp was a professor at Texas A&M for nearly three decades, during which time he also served as head of the Department of Rural Sociology and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and as a mentor; he retired in 1999 but continued teaching at the university as a professor emeritus; and WHEREAS, Considered an expert in the field of rural sociology, Dr. Copp authored several books on the subject, including Our Changing Rural Society: Perspectives and Trends, which was published in 1964 and is considered a classic in the field, and his most recent book, Population Change in the Rural West, 1975-1990, which was coauthored with John Wardwell; and WHEREAS, Extremely active with the Rural Sociological Society (RSS) and the Southern Rural Sociological Association (SRSA), he received the Distinguished Rural Sociologist Award from the RSS and the Teaching Excellence Award from the SRSA; and WHEREAS, James Copp was a man of dedication, integrity, and wisdom, and while he will be greatly missed, his spirit lives on in the hearts and minds of the many people whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby extend sincere sympathy to the family of James H. Copp: to his wife, Veronica; to his daughters, Christine Avery and her partner, Terry Johnson, Karen and her partner, Steve Hendrix, Sarah and her husband, Humberto La Roche, and Martha and her husband, Jeff Supplee; to his son, John Copp and his wife, Peggy; to his seven grandchildren; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of James H. Copp.
