CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
	WHEREAS, The State of Texas lost a distinguished native son 
with the passing of John W. Holtermann on January 6, 2002, at the 
age of 90; and
	WHEREAS, Mr. Holtermann was born on August 2, 1911, in 
Sattler, and as a child was educated in a one-room schoolhouse; and
	WHEREAS, He exchanged wedding vows with the former Gladys 
Lehmberg on June 1, 1932, and the couple enjoyed a close and 
fulfilling marriage until her passing in 1996; blessed with a fine 
family that included a son and three daughters, Mr. Holtermann also 
took great joy in his 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; 
and
	WHEREAS, In 1934, Mr. Holtermann moved his family to San 
Antonio, where he was employed in the insurance business; a decade 
later, he embarked on a successful career with Litton Office 
Products that spanned 37 years and prompted a move to Brownsville; 
and
	WHEREAS, In retirement, this highly regarded individual made 
his home in San Marcos and continued to lead a life of exemplary 
service in behalf of others that began in the 1940s; a charter 
member of the Texas Silver-Haired Legislature, he was chairman 
emeritus of its Legislative Action Committee and was known to and 
respected by many in public office as a passionate and informed 
advocate for the causes in which he believed; in his community, he 
faithfully served the congregation of First United Methodist Church 
as head usher, participated in Lions International, and served on 
the board of the San Marcos Public Library; and
	WHEREAS, In recognition of his selfless commitment to his 
fellow Texans, Mr. Holtermann was accorded many accolades that 
deeply touched this unassuming individual; in 1993 he was presented 
with a certificate commending him for his volunteer service from 
Governor Ann Richards, in 1998 he was honored by the Texas 
Legislature with John W. Holtermann Day at the State Capitol, and in 
2001 he received an award from Governor Rick Perry for his 
outstanding dedication and service to the State of Texas; and
	WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous awards from such entities 
as the Texas Department on Aging, the Texas Department of Health, 
and the City of San Marcos, he was selected as one of "The Greatest 
Generation of Texans" by Southwest Airlines and Texas Monthly, and 
the children's chapel at First United Methodist Church in San 
Marcos was named in honor of his dedicated service as well as that 
of his wife; and
	WHEREAS, The life of John W. Holtermann has been an 
immeasurable blessing to his family, to his friends, and to people 
throughout the State of Texas, and his spirit will continue to warm 
the hearts of all who knew and admired him; now, therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas 
hereby pay tribute to the life of John W. Holtermann and extend 
sincere sympathy to his son, John W. Holtermann, Jr., and his wife, 
Pat; to his daughter, June Scott, and her husband, Thomas; to his 
sons-in-law, Robert Caldwell and Richard C. Graham; to his 
grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and to his other relatives 
and many friends; and, be it further
	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 
prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House 
of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory 
of John W. Holtermann.
