CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, It is a distinct pleasure to welcome the delegation
from Eagle Pass to Austin on March 5, 2003, for Eagle Pass Day at the
State Capitol; and
WHEREAS, Named El Paso del Aguila because of the frequent
flights of Mexican eagles over the area, Eagle Pass is the county
seat for Maverick County; located on the border with Mexico and
settled during the mid-19th century, it has a fascinating history
and is an important gateway between Mexico and the United States;
and
WHEREAS, A favorite of tourists from across the state, Eagle
Pass has several points of historic significance, including Fort
Duncan Park and San Juan Plaza; those who enjoy the outdoors may
spend the day at Maverick County Lake, and sister city Piedras
Negras offers a bustling outdoor marketplace and the rustic charm
of old Mexico; and
WHEREAS, With its promising economy consisting of industry,
tourism, and recreation, as well as being a good place to retire,
Eagle Pass occupies an enviable position among the cities of
Southwest Texas; moreover, city and county governments, in
coordination with the Eagle Pass Chamber of Commerce, are committed
to the expansion and development of this community's many
resources, including local infrastructure improvements,
construction of an international trade and convention center, and
preservation of historic sites; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to making the future of Eagle Pass a
bright one, the following groups and individuals are truly
deserving of a special welcome to the State Capitol: the Eagle Pass
Chamber of Commerce, Maverick County Judge Jose "Pepe" Aranda, Jr.,
the Maverick County Commissioners Court, Mayor Joaquin Rodriguez,
the City of Eagle Pass elected officials and employees, the
Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas, the Eagle Pass Independent
School District, the Texas Retired Teachers Association, Southwest
Texas Junior College, Sul Ross State University-Rio Grande College,
the law firm of Langley and Banack, the Maverick County Development
Corporation, CASSE, Inc., Fort Duncan Medical Center, the Eagle
Pass health care community, Luna Hometown Pharmacy, the Eagle Pass
media community, South Texas National Bank, IBC Bank of Eagle Pass,
Sterling Bank of Eagle Pass, Middle Rio Grande Maverick Workforce
Center, Middle Rio Grande Development Council, Trade Services of
Texas, and the Texas State Teachers Association; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished group of business leaders,
educators, civic leaders, and citizens will be meeting with members
of the legislature throughout this Working Day at the Capitol to
share ideas and information about how best to meet the challenges
and create opportunities for the residents of Eagle Pass and the
Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas
hereby recognize March 5, 2003, as Eagle Pass Day at the State
Capitol and extend sincere best wishes to the members of the
visiting delegation for an enjoyable, memorable, and productive
Working Day at the Capitol.
