CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The 100th birthday of Martelia Garnet Reaves of El
Paso on March 10, 2003, will commemorate another important
milestone for a woman who has not only lived life, but has embraced
it to the fullest; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Reaves finds great joy in reading and has a
fondness for good mystery novels; she receives about 40 books a
month from the Talking Book Program of the Texas State Library and
Archives Commission, which has enabled her to continue her passion
for reading throughout her golden years; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable woman has witnessed many
significant changes and developments during her long and fruitful
life; and
WHEREAS, She has seen the horse-drawn carriages of her youth
replaced by modern automobiles that travel across our country on
intricate ribbons of highway; born in a time before airplanes, she
has lived to see the age of rockets and to witness the incredible
sight of a human being treading the surface of Earth's moon; and
WHEREAS, Not all of her memories have been pleasant ones; she
has witnessed the pain of two world wars and lived through the Great
Depression, but she has also seen the love, compassion, and decency
that abide in the human heart and the hope and determination with
which young people seek a better future; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her many rewarding years, this gracious
lady has brought joy and happiness to the countless people whose
lives she has touched, and she has earned the lasting respect and
affection of all who are privileged to know her; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas
hereby honor Martelia Garnet Reaves on the momentous occasion of
her 100th birthday and extend to her sincere best wishes for the
future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mrs. Reaves as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
