CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, On October 27, 2002, Abilene's John Lackey helped lead the Anaheim Angels to a world championship victory, becoming the first rookie pitcher to win Game 7 of a World Series since 1909; and WHEREAS, John Lackey is the son of Sharon and Derran Lackey, who were longtime residents of Abilene; Derran Lackey was John's head baseball coach at Abilene High School; and WHEREAS, A former Abilene High School Eagle, Mr. Lackey was called up from the Triple-A Salt Lake City Stingers to the big leagues on June 24, 2002, and earned a spot in the Angels' pitching rotation; and WHEREAS, The big right-hander compiled a record of 9-4 with a 3.66 earned run average and helped propel his team into the playoffs and eventually to its first World Series title; he earned two post-season victories in his role as starter and reliever, and his memorable performance in Game 7 has established him as a true big-game pitcher; and WHEREAS, Pitching in the final game of the World Series is a dream held by countless young men, and John Lackey's exceptional performance in the 2002 World Series will surely provide future generations with inspiration to make their own dreams a reality; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby honor John Lackey for his contributions to the success of the world champion Anaheim Angels and congratulate him on becoming the first rookie pitcher in 93 years to win Game 7 of the World Series; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Lackey as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
