H.C.R. No. 85
HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Volunteerism in Texas has a long and storied history
that fills citizens of the Lone Star State with pride, and the Texas
Legislature is pleased to honor the many individuals who dedicate
themselves to helping others; and
WHEREAS, Perhaps the earliest example of volunteerism in
Texas took place in 1836, when 189 like-minded individuals banded
together to defend the Alamo; this event set the stage for future
generations of volunteers, and today millions of Texans devote
themselves to altruistic causes; and
WHEREAS, Whether serving as a mentor, teaching someone to
read and write, making a financial contribution to a charitable
cause, or helping Texas families move from welfare to work,
countless Lone Star State citizens are united in their efforts to
help those less fortunate than themselves; and
WHEREAS, President Bush has issued a call for all Americans
to volunteer service, to commit themselves to a minimum of 4,000
hours; and
WHEREAS, Programs such as Governor Perry's OneStar
Foundation seek to "empower Texans in need with the help of
volunteers dedicated to meeting need"; the goal of the OneStar
Foundation is to work with state and local organizations and direct
volunteers to the areas where they are needed most; and
WHEREAS, Volunteers are the lifeblood of charities and
nonprofit organizations, and the members of the Texas Legislature
encourage all Texans to make a contribution to helping others
through volunteering; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas
hereby commend the many outstanding Texans who volunteer their time
and energy to help others, as well as the faith-based and community
organizations that support volunteers, and encourage all Texans to
make a commitment to volunteering in 2003 and beyond.
