CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, James Allan Smith is concluding an outstanding
career dedicated to educational excellence with his June 6, 2003,
retirement as superintendent of the Robinson Independent School
District; and
WHEREAS, An alumnus of Tarleton State College and Prairie
View A&M University, Mr. Smith holds a bachelor of arts degree and a
master's degree in educational administration as well as
midmanagement and superintendent certification; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Smith has devoted his considerable talents to
the betterment of the Robinson ISD for 33 years; he began his career
as a teacher and coach, later served as assistant principal,
transportation director, and principal, and since 1990 has guided
the district as superintendent; under his able leadership, the
district has attained an "exemplary" rating from the Texas
Education Agency and given its students a strong foundation on
which to build; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Smith has also been involved with educational
programs and policies that reach outside the district; he served as
regional deputy director of the Equity Center, chaired the District
17AAA UIL Executive Committee, was a member of the Governance Board
of the McLennan County Challenge Academy, and further distinguished
himself on the task force of the Texas Tech University/Baylor
University Partnership for the Professional Development of
Teachers and as a valued member of a number of other educational
organizations; and
WHEREAS, An active reserve deputy sheriff with the McLennan
County Sheriff's Department since 1980, this civic-minded
individual has participated in a host of local groups, including
the Greater Robinson Chamber of Commerce, the Robinson Economic
Development Committee, Meadowbrook Baptist Church, and the Safe
Communities Coalition, to name but a few; and
WHEREAS, In honor of his commitment and professionalism, the
Robinson High School Chapter of the National Honor Society was
renamed the James A. Smith Chapter in 1990, and Mr. Smith was named
the recipient of a 2001-2002 Community Service Award from the
Greater Robinson Chamber of Commerce; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his career, James Smith has set high
standards to which all educators and administrators may aspire, and
his myriad contributions to the Robinson ISD will not soon be
forgotten; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas
hereby commend James Allan Smith for his exceptional career with
the Robinson Independent School District and extend to him sincere
best wishes for a happy and rewarding retirement; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Smith as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives and Senate.
