CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Clayton W. "Claytie" Williams, Jr., is this year's recipient of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Hope Award for Midland and the Permian Basin, and it is a privilege to pay tribute to this noteworthy Texan for his many lasting contributions that will benefit the people of this state for years to come; and WHEREAS, A modern-day success story, Mr. Williams has truly lived the American Dream of entrepreneurship through his efforts in the oil industry and as a farmer, rancher, high-tech executive, and real estate developer; in addition, he was a guest lecturer at his alma mater, Texas A&M University, in the 1980s and 1990s and earned the Dean's Service Award for Teaching Excellence; and WHEREAS, Possessed of unparalleled determination and uncommon entrepreneurial instincts, this visionary leader established Clajon Gas Company in 1957, and it eventually became the largest individually owned gas company in Texas; subsequent ventures include Clayton Williams Energy and ClayDesta Communications and more than 20 other companies; and WHEREAS, A former gubernatorial candidate, Mr. Williams is perhaps most proud of his status as one of the youngest Texas A&M graduates to receive that university's Distinguished Alumni Award, an honor he accepted in 1980; his passion for all things Aggie is well known, and his generosity to Texas A&M University has greatly benefited the students, faculty, and staff of that institution; and WHEREAS, Mr. Williams's philanthropic endeavors have earned him the respect and admiration of countless Texans, and his receipt of the Hope Award for Midland and the Permian Basin--the highest annual honor presented by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society--is indeed richly deserved; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby congratulate Clayton W. "Claytie" Williams, Jr., on his receipt of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Hope Award for Midland and the Permian Basin and commend him for his contributions to the citizens of Texas; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Williams as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
