HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Fort Worth Dunbar High School boys' basketball team has attained the pinnacle of success by winning the 2003 UIL Class 4A state championship, the school's second state title in its storied history of hardwood excellence; and WHEREAS, Facing undefeated Beaumont Ozen High School in the title game, this determined Dunbar team rallied from an eight-point deficit in the second half to claim a thrilling 66-54 victory, avenging last year's state tournament semifinal loss to Ozen and completing the Wildcats' storybook 2002-2003 campaign with a record of 37-1; and WHEREAS, Although each player made significant contributions to the team's overall success, several Wildcats also garnered well-deserved individual distinction; chosen for the all-tournament team were Lance Jackson, Dominique Williams, and Jeremis Smith, who was also named the tournament's most valuable player; and WHEREAS, Dunbar's legendary head coach Robert Hughes, who recently became America's winningest high school basketball coach and was elected into the National High School Sports Hall of Fame, worked tirelessly to help his players achieve their championship dream, and he was ably supported in his efforts by assistant coaches Rambo Leondas, Charles Hickman, and Wendell Ivory; and WHEREAS, These exceptional student-athletes, with their coaches and staff, are a source of great pride to students and faculty at Dunbar High School, as well as their many supporters in the community, and it is truly appropriate that the team's accomplishments receive special legislative recognition at this time; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby congratulate the members of the Fort Worth Dunbar High School boys' basketball team on winning the 2003 UIL Class 4A state title and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for prominent display at Fort Worth Dunbar High School as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
