CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Southlake Carroll High School Dragons football
team has achieved the pinnacle of success by winning the 2002 UIL
Class 5A, Division II, state championship in their first year of
competition in that classification; and
WHEREAS, Although the team had staged dramatic comebacks
during their march through the playoffs, Southlake Carroll needed
no last-second heroics in the championship game, where they
overwhelmed Spring Branch Smithson Valley High School 45-14 to
claim the coveted crown; and
WHEREAS, A gridiron powerhouse at the 3A level, Southlake
Carroll confounded football prognosticators and pollsters who had
predicted little success for the Dragons during the 2002 campaign;
and
WHEREAS, Head coach Todd Dodge, with his coaches and staff,
provided exceptional leadership and guidance to his young athletes,
enabling them to make Texas high school football history by
becoming the first team ever to win a state championship in their
inaugural year in a new UIL classification; and
WHEREAS, The Southlake Carroll High School Dragons football
team, along with the school's band, drill team, crew, and
cheerleaders, is a source of great pride to its many supporters in
the community, and it is indeed appropriate that the team receive
special legislative recognition for its remarkable achievements;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas
hereby congratulate the members of the Southlake Carroll High
School football team for their commitment to excellence and their
willingness to work hard in pursuit of their goal, which resulted in
the 2002 UIL Class 5A, Division II, state championship; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the team members and coaching staff as an expression of
high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
