CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Houston firefighter Jay Jahnke died in the line of duty on October 13, 2001, at the age of 40, and the tragic passing of this heroic individual deeply saddened the communities he served and all who were privileged to know him; and WHEREAS, Captain Jay P. Jahnke exemplified, in his personal and professional conduct, the singular virtues of courage, integrity, and unwavering dedication; and WHEREAS, Born and raised in Houston, Captain Jahnke was an active member of the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association, was a member of Houston's Medical Strike Team and Swift Water Rescue, and was Haz-Mat certified; he enjoyed the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, where he was an investigator for the rodeo's safety committee, and was a chief safety officer with the Cy-Creek Volunteer Fire Department; and WHEREAS, In addition, Captain Jahnke ably instructed students at the Texas A&M Fire School and the Houston Fire Department Citizens Fire Academy; and WHEREAS, This noble gentleman was a member of the Houston Fire Department for 20 years and was most recently assigned to Fire Station No. 2; from a long line of firefighters, he was the son of a district fire chief and the nephew or cousin of more than a dozen firefighters; and WHEREAS, Throughout his many years with the department, his record was one of meritorious service, loyalty, personal courage, and self-sacrifice consistent with the high ideals of the fire-fighting profession; Jay Jahnke was a passionate defender of life and property, and while he will be greatly missed, the legacy of integrity and bravery he leaves behind will not soon be forgotten; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby pay special tribute to the life of Jay P. Jahnke and extend sincere sympathy to his family: to his wife, Dawn; to his daughter, Jayne; to his son, Hunter; to his mother, Katherine; to his brother, Jeff; to his sisters, Karen and Mary Ann; and to his many beloved friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of Jay P. Jahnke.
