CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Texas Legislature is pleased to recognize the battleship Texas on the 55th anniversary of her arrival at the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site; and WHEREAS, Commissioned in 1914, the USS Texas is the only surviving battleship to have served in World War I and World War II; after being decommissioned, she was docked at the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site in La Porte, Texas, on April 21, 1948; and WHEREAS, The battleship Texas is a living memorial to the countless men who served aboard her in defense of their country; and WHEREAS, For her service to the United States during World War I, the battleship Texas was awarded the World War I Victory Medal; she was also recognized for her service in World War II, which included the invasion of Normandy, the Iwo Jima operation, and other significant naval missions; and WHEREAS, The Battleship Texas Foundation promotes education, restoration, and enhancements directly related to the preservation of the battleship Texas; the foundation will host a 55th anniversary celebration on April 26, 2003, to honor and to recall the illustrious history of this much-revered battleship; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby honor the battleship Texas on the 55th anniversary of her arrival in Texas and recognize her as a historical treasure of the people of Texas; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for this important occasion as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
