                                                                H.C.R. No. 179


HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Texas Cooperative Extension in Tarrant County is carrying out numerous educational programs to enhance the quality of life for area citizens; and WHEREAS, In the spring of 1999, local residents gathered at the Tarrant County Futures Forum to identify issues deserving the attention of Tarrant County extension; volunteers working with county extension staff then developed a number of programs to address the needs highlighted at that gathering; the cycle of citizen evaluation and program planning begins again in 2003; and WHEREAS, Following the 1999 forum, Tarrant County extension, often working with community partners, created a number of effective programs in the areas of health, environmental awareness, quality developmental activities for youth, and expanded educational opportunities for youth, adults, and at-risk populations; and WHEREAS, Contributing to the success of extension programs are a host of dedicated volunteers and partner institutions; in 2002, in tribute to their exemplary service and support, Tarrant County extension was pleased to confer its Friend of Extension Award on Tarrant County College and its Joan South Spirit of Extension Award on Sheryl Harris; and WHEREAS, Equally essential to the vitality of Tarrant County Extension are the unit's skilled and devoted staff--its director, Dr. Joan I. Gillespie, its office manager, Betty George, and its faculty members, Eddie Byrom, Jasmine Chai, Terrance Q. Hollins, Kenneth Johnson, Jr., Hurley E. Miller, Darlene Myatt, Becca Robinson, Marian Ross, Dana Tarter, Bernadette Webre, and Dotty Woodson; and WHEREAS, Two of these staff members have recently won recognition for their civic involvement; Ms. George was congratulated by the commissioners court as she graduated from Tarrant County's Leadership Development program, and Ms. Chai was presented the Outstanding Community Leader Award from the Tarrant County Asian American Chamber of Commerce; and WHEREAS, Tarrant County extension staff, volunteers, and partners are enriching the lives of countless area residents and helping to build a community that can meet the challenges of the 21st century; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby honor all those involved with Texas Cooperative Extension in Tarrant County for their exemplary service to their fellow citizens and convey to them sincere best wishes for success in their future endeavors.
