H.C.R. No. 201
HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Del Rio's Todd Hays gained the respect and
admiration of fans the world over with his performance at the 2002
Salt Lake Winter Olympic Games; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Hays and the members of his four-man bobsled
team ended a frustrating 46-year medal drought for the U.S. Men's
Bobsled Team by winning the silver medal at the Salt Lake Games;
this Olympic hero also earned a hard-fought fourth-place finish in
the two-man team event, a performance that clearly demonstrated the
razor-thin margin of error that characterizes this high-speed
sport; and
WHEREAS, A former Del Rio High School quarterback and college
football player, this 1993 national kickboxing champion began his
bobsledding career just nine years ago when he won a push contest
sponsored by the bobsled federation; his outstanding athletic
ability enabled him to succeed early on as a bobsled pusher, but it
was his determination and inner strength that led him to excel in
the much more demanding role of bobsled driver; and
WHEREAS, His road to Olympic glory has been marked by a great
deal of personal success and team accomplishment on the national
and international levels, including winning the two-man and
four-man 2000 U.S. Sliding Sport Championships and the 2000
National Team Selection Races; in addition, he won the four-man
championship at the 2001 Lake Placid World Cup, earned a silver
medal in the four-man competition at the 2001 Winterberg World Cup,
and took home gold in the two-man and four-man events at the 2001
Calgary World Cup; and
WHEREAS, With his remarkable performance at the Salt Lake
Games, Mr. Hays firmly established himself as America's premier
male bobsled driver and earned a prominent place in the annals of
American bobsledding; given his strong work ethic and his rise to
the heights of bobsledding excellence, it is clear to his many fans
that he will continue to race toward even greater glory in the years
to come; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas
hereby congratulate Todd Hays on his success at the 2002 Salt Lake
Winter Olympic Games and commend him for his dedication to sporting
excellence and for representing the United States of America with
dignity, courage, and honor; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Hays as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives and Senate.
