CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Track and field legend Jim Hines earned the respect and admiration of countless individuals during his remarkable career as one of the world's top sprinters, and it is a privilege to honor this esteemed gentleman at this time; and WHEREAS, Born September 10, 1946, in Dumas, Arkansas, Mr. Hines moved to Oakland, California, with his family in 1952; he developed a love for baseball during his early years, and his astounding speed made him a natural in the outfield; and WHEREAS, It was as a member of his high school track team, however, that he made his mark, going undefeated in the 100-yard and 220-yard dashes during his high school career and tying the national prep school record with a 9.4-second 100-yard dash as a senior; and WHEREAS, Mr. Hines attended Texas Southern University in Houston and soon established himself as a leader on the school's track team; he equaled the world record of 9.1 seconds in the 100-yard dash, and, at an Amateur Athletic Union Nationals semifinal, he became the first person to break the 10-second barrier in the 100-meter dash; and WHEREAS, At the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, Mr. Hines earned a gold medal and the title "World's Fastest Human" after winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 9.95 seconds; he also anchored the men's 4x100-meter relay team, which won gold with a world record time of 38.2 seconds; and WHEREAS, A member of the International Track and Field Hall of Fame, the United States Track and Field Hall of Fame, and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, Mr. Hines held the 100-meter world record and the "World's Fastest Human" moniker for an astonishing 15 years; and WHEREAS, Few individuals have demonstrated the passion and commitment to excellence that characterized the athletic career of Jim Hines, and as we approach the 35th anniversary of his record-setting Olympic performance, it is fitting that we pause to acknowledge his extraordinary accomplishments; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby commend Jim Hines for his outstanding athletic achievements and extend to him best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Hines as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
