CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. Donald R. Lewis on February 24, 2002, brought an immense loss to the family, friends, and colleagues of this beloved Texas physician, as well as to the entire community of Paris; and WHEREAS, Educated at The University of Texas at Austin and The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston, Dr. Lewis was a surgical resident of Jersey City Medical Center before joining the U.S. Army Medical Corps in 1946 to serve in general and field hospitals in post-war Germany; in 1950 he returned to his hometown of Paris to launch a successful medical practice and soon distinguished himself as a surgeon of compassion, skill, and intelligence; and WHEREAS, This renowned physician served the residents of Northeast Texas and Southeast Oklahoma for more than five decades, continuing the work started in 1914 by his father, Dr. R. L. Lewis; in addition to serving as staff president at Lamar General Hospital and L. P. McCuistion Community Hospital, he was chief of staff at the Paris Sanitarium and at McCuistion Regional Medical Center, which he also served as medical director from 1996 to 2000; one year after his retirement, Lewis Hall was dedicated in honor of Dr. Lewis and his father at the McCuistion Women's Pavilion in recognition of their exceptional contributions to patient care in the community and region; and WHEREAS, Dr. Lewis remained an active and respected member of the Paris community throughout his life; named the Optimist Club Man of the Year in 1976, he was a member of the Rotary Club, the Century Club, and the Lamar County Chamber of Commerce, and he further shared his leadership and vision with organizations at both his alma maters; he was also a former president of the Paris Golf and Country Club, and on October 19, 2003, the National Kidney Foundation of North Texas will host the Donald R. Lewis Memorial Golf Tournament at his home course to pay tribute to the legacy of this remarkable man who is greatly missed by all who were privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Donald R. Lewis and extend profound sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Priscilla Scott Lewis; to his daughter and son-in-law, Priscilla and Bill Darling; to his sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Mary Helen Lewis, Michael and Lisa Lewis, Randall and Kristen Lewis, and Derek and Julie Lewis; to his grandchildren, Landon Darling, Donald Lewis III, Ava Lewis, John Lewis, Courtney Lewis, Ellie Lewis, Katie Lewis, Coleman Lewis, and Henry Lewis; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of Dr. Donald R. Lewis.
