CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, U.S. Army Second Lieutenant Cory Steele of The Woodlands suffered severe injuries April 9, 2003, while serving in Iraq; and WHEREAS, An infantry platoon leader with the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, Lieutenant Steele was searching a building in the town of Hilla with his team when a booby trap left by Iraqi troops detonated, breaking and seriously damaging his right leg; after undergoing numerous surgeries to treat his wounds, this courageous soldier is now facing an extended period of recuperation; and WHEREAS, Lieutenant Steele is a 1996 graduate of McCullough High School and a 2000 graduate of Texas A&M University, where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets; receiving his commission in the army represented the fulfillment of a longtime ambition, and Lieutenant Steele expects to return to duty at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, home base of his division, when he is cleared for active duty; and WHEREAS, Awarded the Purple Heart, Lieutenant Steele received this award personally from Thomas White, then secretary of the army, while being treated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.; and WHEREAS, Through his unfaltering devotion to duty, honor, and this country, Lieutenant Steele has embodied the highest ideals of the armed forces and earned the lasting respect and gratitude of all Americans; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby honor U.S. Army Second Lieutenant Cory Steele for his brave and steadfast service in this nation's behalf and extend to him sincere best wishes for a swift and full recovery; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Lieutenant Steele as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
