CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Rudy Tomjanovich has retired as head coach of the Houston Rockets, having left an indelible mark in the annals of NBA history during his remarkable 33-year career as player, scout, broadcaster, assistant coach, and head coach of the team; and WHEREAS, "Rudy T" was a consensus All-American at the University of Michigan, and, as the 1970 NBA draft's second overall pick, he played for 11 years with the Rockets; for his dominance as a player, which included leading the team in scoring during the 1976-1977 season and helping to bring the franchise its first divisional championship, this five-time NBA All-Star was deservedly honored by the franchise when he became the first Rockets player to have his jersey number retired; and WHEREAS, After concluding his playing career in 1981, Coach Tomjanovich ably served the Rockets as a scout for two years before becoming an assistant coach in 1983; his selection as head coach in 1992 launched a stellar era of basketball excellence for the city of Houston; and WHEREAS, Assembling a talented cast of athletes and inspiring them with exceptional leadership, Coach Tomjanovich twice gave Rockets fans the ultimate taste of victory by winning the 1993-1994 and 1994-1995 NBA championships; and WHEREAS, Coach Tomjanovich tallied a 503-397 professional record during his 12 years as head coach; he also led the 1998 USA World Championship Team to a bronze medal in Athens, Greece, and earned a gold medal as head coach of the USA Basketball Mens' Senior National Team at the 2000 Sydney Olympics; and WHEREAS, A mentor to players and a favorite of fans, "Rudy T" will forever hold a place of prestige among basketball's greatest coaches, and he will undoubtedly continue to serve the franchise with the same passion, commitment, and integrity he has demonstrated throughout his long association with the Rockets; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby recognize the outstanding coaching career of Rudy Tomjanovich and extend to him all the best in the years to come; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Coach Tomjanovich as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
