R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Jerry LeVias is one of the most celebrated football
players in the history of Southern Methodist University (SMU); his
achievements as a Mustang remain undimmed by the passage of time and
will be deservedly celebrated on December 9, 2003, when he is
inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, The first African American to play football at SMU,
as well as the first to receive a scholarship in the Southwest
Conference, Mr. LeVias was one of college football's premier
receivers from 1966 to 1968, when he pulled down 155 passes for
2,275 yards and 22 touchdowns; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable student-athlete was a consensus
All-American, earned first team All-Southwest Conference honors
three times, and was fifth in the Heisman Trophy balloting after his
senior year; equally dedicated to excellence in the classroom, he
was named to the Academic All-American team in 1968; and
WHEREAS, Departing SMU with numerous school and conference
receiving records to his credit, Mr. LeVias went on to enjoy a
six-year career in professional football with the Houston Oilers
and the San Diego Chargers; and
WHEREAS, Jerry LeVias was one of college football's most
consistently electrifying performers as a member of the SMU
Mustangs, and it is indeed appropriate that his enduring legacy of
excellence receive special legislative recognition at this time;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby honor Jerry LeVias on his remarkable athletic
career and his upcoming induction into the College Football Hall of
Fame; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Jerry LeVias as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
