R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The passing of former Congressman John A. Young, on
January 22, 2002, at the age of 85, brought a great loss to the
family and friends of this notable Texan; and
WHEREAS, A native of Corpus Christi, Mr. Young served as U.S.
Representative for Nueces and surrounding counties from 1956 to
1979 and was an active supporter of the Port of Corpus Christi
throughout his tenure; during the 1960s, he led an initiative to
bring an international airport to the city, and he fought
tirelessly to maintain funding for the Naval Air Station in Corpus
Christi; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Young was a key supporter of the Kennedy and
Johnson administrations; he served with integrity on the House
Rules Committee, House Merchant Marine & Fisheries Committee, and
House Post Office and Civil Service Committee, always keeping the
best interests of his constituents and his country foremost in his
mind; and
WHEREAS, In a sad footnote, Mr. Young rode in President
Kennedy's motorcade on the day of the president's assassination;
after leaving office, Mr. Young practiced law in Washington, D.C.,
and Corpus Christi and worked as a political consultant; and
WHEREAS, When he was a young man, Mr. Young graduated from St.
Edwards University and The University of Texas School of Law,
entering the Texas State Bar Association in 1940; his legal
ambitions were put on hold while he answered his country's call to
duty as a member of the U.S. Navy during World War II; after
retiring as a lieutenant commander, he returned to Texas and served
as an assistant district attorney, Nueces County attorney, and
Nueces County judge; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Young is remembered as a distinguished Texan
whose 22-year record of congressional service made his district,
state, and nation a better place in which to live and work; his
numerous contributions have ensured that his spirit will live on in
the hearts of the many people whose lives he touched; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of John A. Young and
extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his son,
John Young, Jr.; to his daughters, Gaffiny Phillips, Nancy Young,
and Mary Patricia Young; to his grandson; and to his other relatives
and many friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House
of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of the
Honorable John A. Young.
