H.R. No. 18 


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Linda Johnston, who retired in June 2002 as the founding executive director of Practical Parent Education (PPE) in Plano, is deserving of special tribute for her many years of exemplary leadership and community service; and WHEREAS, A former assistant principal, Mrs. Johnston served as the executive director of PPE from the time of its founding in 1984; the agency, a joint creation of the Plano community and the Plano Independent School District, seeks to support parents in raising confident, responsible, and mentally healthy children; it assists families of all socioeconomic backgrounds and offers all of its services in both English and Spanish; and WHEREAS, Among the resources developed by PPE under Mrs. Johnston's guidance are a library, a Parent Helpline, referral services, support groups, and workshops; two core programs--the PPE curricula and a series of seminars titled For Kids' Sake--have won such favorable notice that they have been adopted by numerous other communities, both within and without the State of Texas; and WHEREAS, A highly regarded expert in the field of parenting education, Mrs. Johnston has written frequently for parenting journals and spoken at numerous state and national conferences; she has also served as president of the Greater Dallas Parenting Coalition; and WHEREAS, Recent accolades for her exceptional efforts include a Special Award of Merit from the Plano Chamber of Commerce and a Legacy of Commitment Award from the John Freeman Hightower Foundation; and WHEREAS, The unwavering devotion and energetic leadership that Linda Johnston has brought to parenting education have bettered the lives of countless parents and children throughout the Lone Star State and beyond, and her notable service will continue to bear fruit for many years to come; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby honor Linda Johnston on the occasion of her retirement as executive director of Practical Parent Education and extend to her sincere appreciation for her tremendous contributions to the families of Texas; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mrs. Johnston as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
