R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Residents of Nacogdoches lost a beloved neighbor and
friend with the passing of Margaret Williams Hume on December 6,
2002; and
WHEREAS, A native of San Antonio, Mrs. Hume was born on
February 12, 1921; she attended Our Lady of the Lake College and
graduated from the Texas State College for Women in 1942, earning a
bachelor of arts degree in bacteriology and a bachelor of science
degree in clinical pathology and chemistry; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Hume began her medical career at Scott and
White Memorial Hospital in Temple; after completing her internship
at that facility, she accepted a position as hospital administrator
for Eagle Pass Memorial Hospital, during which time she was listed
in Who's Who in American Women for her achievements in science; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan accepted an appointment at
Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital in 1974, and she served there until
her retirement in 1991, winning widespread respect and admiration
for her tireless dedication to her profession; and
WHEREAS, In addition to her career, Mrs. Hume was very active
politically; a charter member of the Texas Democratic Women of
Nacogdoches County, she held numerous leadership positions within
the organization and both wrote and published its newsletter, The
Whistle Stop; she also served as a delegate to state and national
Democratic conventions and as secretary and chair of the
Nacogdoches County Democratic Party; and
WHEREAS, Other organizations benefited from her natural
leadership abilities as well, including the Nacogdoches Genealogy
Society and the American Association of Retired Persons; and
WHEREAS, For her dedicated efforts, Mrs. Hume was awarded the
National Federation of Democratic Women Star, was inducted into the
Nacogdoches Women's Hall of Fame in the government category, and
was named Member of the Year by Texas Democratic Women; and
WHEREAS, Margaret Hume was a woman of determination,
foresight, and wisdom, and although she is greatly missed, the
legacy of excellence that she leaves behind will not soon be
forgotten; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Margaret Williams
Hume and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to
her sister, Patricia Williams Gannon; to her daughter, Margeann
Boen; to her grandson, Brent McMillan; to her nephew, Greg Gannon;
to her nieces, Patrice Hathaway, Lisa Gannon, and Martha Gannon; to
her three great-nieces; and to her other relatives and many
friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas House
of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Margaret
Williams Hume.
